How I Photographed the Seattle Skyline from Kerry Park

Seattle is one of those cities that changes every few minutes. The clouds move, Mount Rainier appears and disappears, ferries cross the water, and the skyline shifts as the light moves across Elliott Bay. That is why Kerry Park has remained one of my favorite places to photograph the city.

Why Kerry Park works for panoramic photography

From Kerry Park, the city lines up in layers: the Space Needle in the foreground, downtown behind it, and Mount Rainier beyond the skyline when the mountain is visible. A single frame can capture the scene, but I wanted a wider image with enough detail to hold up when printed large.

For the updated Seattle skyline panorama, I photographed a sequence of overlapping frames and stitched 18 high-resolution images together. The goal was not simply a wider photograph. It was to preserve detail across the city so that buildings, light, water, and distant mountain atmosphere would still feel convincing in a large panoramic print.

Waiting for the right Seattle light

Seattle rarely gives you the same sky twice. The most useful thing I have learned is to give the scene time. A flat gray sky can open for a few minutes. Sunset color can appear behind clouds that looked completely closed. Sometimes the mountain is the star; other times the city lights and weather become the story.

I try to photograph the city in a way that feels familiar to people who know Seattle rather than forcing it into a postcard look. That means keeping the cool atmosphere, the water, the changing weather, and the relationship between the city and the surrounding landscape.

Choosing a Seattle print for your wall

Panoramas work especially well above a sofa, desk, bed, or long console because the horizontal format follows the architecture of the room. Smaller Seattle photographs can work as part of a gallery wall, while a 12×36 or larger panorama becomes the focal point.

You can explore the complete Seattle wall art and skyline photography collection, including the updated Kerry Park panorama, Lake Union and Mount Rainier, and other Seattle landmarks.

If you are deciding between paper, canvas, metal, or a larger panoramic format, my print size and material guide is a good place to compare options before ordering.
