Under the Pier at Scripps: How I Shot This Long-Exposure Seascape

The Idea

Scripps Pier in San Diego (La Jolla) is a dream for symmetry and leading lines. I wanted the pillars to form a tunnel toward a bright horizon while a long exposure smoothed the Pacific into a calm, misty base—clean, minimalist, and peaceful on a wall

Scouting & Timing

  • Location: Scripps Pier, La Jolla, San Diego, California (shot beneath the pier, centered between the front pilings).

  • Best time: Overcast or Golden Hour, for soft, even light.

  • Tide & safety: Check the tide chart; I set up well above the wash line, watched sets for a few minutes, and planted the tripod legs firmly in the sand.

Gear

Full-frame, Nikon D850 • 24–70mm (around 35–40mm) • sturdy tripod • circular polarizer • optional 3-stop ND • remote/2-sec timer.

Composition (Symmetry That Feels Effortless)

  • Stand dead-center to align the pier’s centerline with the frame.

  • Keep the horizon perfectly level (use the electronic level).

  • Leave breathing room—sky and foreground sand—to let the geometry shine.

Camera Settings (starting point)

Manual • 0.8–2 s shutter for silky water • f/11 for depth • ISO 100WB 5200–5600K on overcast days • manual focus on a mid-pier piling, then AF off.

Tip: If the water pattern is messy, shoot a short burst of 6–10 frames—you’ll have options for the most elegant wave texture.

Field Workflow

  1. Center and level the frame.

  2. Test 1/4s → 1/2s → ~1–2s until water looks smooth but still alive.

  3. Use the polarizer to cut glare on wet sand and deepen water color.

  4. Time shots between wave sets; wipe sea spray often.

Editing (Clean, Airy, Print-Ready)

Lightroom:

  • Exposure +0.1–0.3; Highlights –20; Shadows +10; Whites +8 / Blacks –8

  • HSL: tame greens; nudge aquas/teals for a fresh coastal feel

  • Soft sky gradient –0.2 EV for balance

Photoshop:

  • Heal small distractions; fine-tune verticals for perfect symmetry

  • Subtle curves vignette, held off the horizon for a clean draw

Soft-proofing:

  • Paper: +5 Vibrance, slight midtone contrast

  • Acrylic/Metal: keep contrast neutral—materials add pop

Why It Works on a Wall

  • Scripps Pier symmetry + leading lines = instant visual pull

  • Long exposure brings calm, ideal for living rooms and offices

  • Neutral, airy palette pairs with modern interiors

Collector Notes

  • Popular: panoramic and 24×36 framed

  • Premium: Metal or Acrylic face-mount for a glossy gallery presence

  • Signed on back; Certificate of Authenticity available with limited editions
